Background
The University of Wisconsin-Madison confers ten doctoral degrees: Doctor of
Medicine, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Law, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Doctor
of Musical Arts, Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Audiology, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and the Master of Fine
Arts.
1892 through December of 2016 — The Classic Gown
Since the University of Wisconsin
awarded its first doctoral degree to Charles Van Hise in
1892, we have used The Classic black doctoral gown for our degree
candidates and doctoral faculty members. That doctoral gown is black with velvet chevrons on the sleeves and
velvet panels on the front. The color of the velvet chevrons and panels may be black (and worn with any doctoral
hood) or may represent a particular degree (and match the velvet trim of the hood) according to the appropriate
color signifying a particular field of study: forest green (MD), apricot (DNP), purple (JD), sapphire blue
(Ph.D.), gray (D.V.M.), pink (D.Mus.A), olive green (D.Pharm.), spruce green (DAud), green (DPT), or brown
(MFA). The doctoral hood is black with cardinal red lining (representing the University of Wisconsin-Madison)
and the velvet trim of the appropriate academic color.
Our Academic Attire vendor Herff Jones offers The Classic for customers wishing to purchase this style gown.
This doctoral attire is most appropriate for grads who received their degree through December of 2016.
2013 through the Present – The Wisconsin Red Gown
In 2013, the University of Wisconsin
adopted special alternate regalia for Candidates and Faculty wishing to present themselves in academic attire
beyond the classic black gown. The
Wisconsin Red Gown absolutely identifies the wearer as a Wisconsin Graduate or Faculty member– the gown
is red with black velvet trim and has the Shield W crest on both velvet panels. This gown is appropriate for all
doctoral grads and faculty members of the University of Wisconsin.
May 2017 through the Present – The Wisconsin Doctoral Gown
In May of 2017, the University of
Wisconsin moved beyond the Classic Gown and adopted the Wisconsin
Doctoral Gown for grads and faculty. The gown is black with red velvet trim and the Shield W crest on
the left panel.
This gown is appropriate for all doctoral grads and faculty members of the University of Wisconsin.
